Mrs J Deakin

Assistant Principal (SENCo)

I joined The Howard in 2021 as Assistant Principal, SENCo. I come as a Level 5 Specialist Teacher for Specific Learning Difficulties with experience across mainstream settings in Kent. My early work as a Nurture Lead Teacher and Assistant Inclusion Manager strengthened my expertise in motivating hard-to-reach students and building strong relationships with families, while overseeing Pupil Premium and High Prior Attainment enabled me to champion equity and high expectations. After completing my SENCo qualification, I established and led the SEN department in a small mainstream school with a high-needs cohort, while also managing Admissions, Assessment, Enrichment, Personal Development (CEIAG, SMSC, British Values, EDI), and serving as both DDSL and Designated Teacher for LAC. As a Primary School Governor, I supported the school’s journey from RI to Good, leading on Teaching & Learning, Oracy, the Headteacher’s Pay Panel, and Estates. As SENCo at The Howard School, I am continuing my work on Inclusion and high-quality SEND provision by ensuring our students have access to impactful interventions and effective deployment of TAs. I also facilitate the National Professional Qualification (NPQ) in Leading Behaviour and Culture (LBC) and the NPQSEN with LLSE to develop future leaders across London, Thanet, Kent, and Medway.
