Teacher Training

Considering a career in teaching? Join us for our next Teacher Open Day on Wednesday 3rd July 2024

A Highly Rewarding Career

Teaching is a highly rewarding and enjoyable career but it is not all holidays and early finishes! To be a successful teacher, you need to have a passion for supporting young people to reach their potential; a drive to challenge thinking and ideas; and an enthusiasm to bring learning to life. Here, at The Howard School, we want to enable those who have embarked on this career path with the tools and strategies they need to not only fulfil these criteria but to feel confident in fulfilling them.

Pathways Into Teaching

There are several pathways colleagues can choose to enter the world of teaching. At THS, we are proud to work closely with Thames Gateway Teaching School Hub(TGTSH). TGTSH provide support in teaching careers from Initial Teacher Training (ITT) through to providing NPQs in a wide variety of fields, from Leading Literacy to Executive Leadership. As part of this partnership, at THS, we work closely with Kent and Medway Training (KMT) to recruit new teachers to the profession. They offer an array of pathways into teaching which allow trainee teachers to learn in placement schools where they obtain first-hand experience of the roles and responsibilities of being a teacher.

Dedicated Support

At THS, we support our trainees by giving them a dedicated subject mentor who will support them on a daily basis with lesson planning, giving feedback, managing behaviour and fostering relationships with important adults both in school and at home. We have a dedicated ITT Team who are available to trainees as a wider support network. These colleagues deliver our in-house Professional Studies session too. These sessions focus on pedagogy and theory as well as giving trainees access to colleagues in school like our SENco, Behaviour Lead and Rewards Lead so they can understand the strategic importance of these areas as well as have time to speak about their impact on daily school life. At THS, we have trained many colleagues who have gone on to become successful teachers in their own rights. Many of our current staff have trained with us and have stayed for many years.

We value training teachers immensely and want to ensure that we provide a solid foundation to any colleague who wants to teach. We believe building these solid foundations at the beginning of someone’s teaching journey is crucial in ensuring it is both a long and enjoyable career.
